The Beginners Guide to Wellness

But first, what is wellness?

Wellness is simply practicing daily habits that bring us closer to a state of overall health. So let’s talk about the most basic habits that we should be practicing to start our wellness journey. Here are my top five:

  1. Breathe. But not just automatically breathe, but every now and then do it consciously. Research shows that breathing with full awareness regulates the nervous system which is our body’s computer. So slow down, and be aware of how you are breathing. Make it a habit to do conscious breathing throughout your day.

  2. Drink water. Most of our body is made up of water. Water carries nutrients to all of our cells, it flushes toxins and helps our kidneys to function well, it helps with many digestive processes, and it helps our skin stay hydrated among many other benefits. You can make it a habit to drink a glass of water every hour.

  3. Eat well. Food is our fuel, eating a balanced diet support a strong immune system, helps us manage a healthy weight, and provides the right nutrients for our systems to work properly. Nutrition is a broad topic that we will be talking about in future posts, but in the meantime make your meals balanced and whole.

  4. Sleep. This is how we recharge. Sleep is essential for our wellness, it helps regulate many functions of the human body including cell regeneration. Research says that adults should be getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night. Make it a habit to sleep well every day.

  5. Move. Human beings are designed to move. When we exercise our mood improves, we can think better, have more energy, makes us stronger, help us relax, and have a lot more benefits. So start moving wherever you are because when we talk about physical activity the possibilities are endless! Make it a habit to have “movement snacks” throughout your day.

There you have it, my top five for the beginner's guide to wellness. We will be expanding on each one in future posts so stay tuned, and let me know what are the daily habits that bring you closer to a state of health.
